“Ew, Twilight,” I groaned looking at the book I held in my hand.
“Hard to believe there are three horrible sequels right?” my brother Jason said stacking the books into the cart.
I dropped my book into the cart along with the rest of the Twilight books there. We then met up with Justin in the romance section.
“Dude, can we get out of this section? This is embarrassing,” Jason complained putting up his hood to hide his face.
My brother Justin was a sucker for romance novels. He was weird, awkward, and different from other people. Not like me and Jason. We were freaks and we knew that, but Justin, I don’t know what he was.
“Yeah, I’m done here,” Justin answered dropping three books in the cart.
We went to the counter and put the books in front of the cashier. His eyes grew wide like we were crazy.
“You in a book club or something?” he asked as he rang up the books.
“You could say that,” I replied smiling at Jason who gave me a smile back.
“Well you must really like vampires,” he said as he started bagging the books.
“Yeah, we like vampires. But there aren’t vampires in that book. Just sparkly fairies,” I answered loading the bags into the cart while Jason paid.
He looked at me confused but said, “Have fun and come back soon.”
“Oh we will,” I said and we made our way back to the car.
“Dude what about your mom?” Javen asked as we stacked the books in my back yard.
“Mom won’t know. She out shopping today,” I answered.
“Yeah, there’s a sale on boots today and she has to have-,” Jason started and we finished it together in our mom voice.
“The perfect pair.”
“Besides, she probably wouldn’t even care. She doesn’t really care about anything,” I said as I finished stacking the last of my books.
Just then Kate burst through the back gate. “We’ve got a bunch of books to add,” she said breathlessly, “But we need some help.”
Me, Jason, and Javen went to help and saw a huge stack of books in a red wagon with Milly yanking and pulling, barely moving it.
“Hey guys,” she greeted us still tugging at the wagon, “Some help please.”
Jason and Javen pulled the wagon while me and Milly pushed.
“How did you guys get so many?” I asked wiping my forehead with the back of my hand.
“We went all over town. The store clerks thought we were nuts,” Kate laughed as we all started stacking.
“Jas get the lighter fluid,” I commanded as the rest of us finished what we were doing.
He ran off to get it and appeared a second later with two big cans of lighter fluid and a ladder. He handed me one can, and set up his ladder. I got on the one we already had and started to soak the books.
“You didn’t start without me, did you?” I heard Trev come through the back gate.
I groaned, “Of course we did. I told you to be here an hour ago.”
“Well at least you didn’t burn it yet,” he replied winking at me. I wanted to gag.
For some reason, Trev thought he was my boyfriend. I’ve told him to leave me alone and that Jason was going to kick his ass if he didn’t. Yet he continues to try.
Jason and I climbed down and I asked, “Would you like to do the honors?”
He smiled and pulled out a match box. He lit one match and flicked it at the large stack of books. It took about five seconds for the whole thing to catch fire.
“Take that Twilight!” Milly yelled putting her arm around Kate and they both jumped up and down.
“Go to hell you fake ass sparkly vampires!” Jason shouted.
We were yelling and laughing and having a great time. Then we all went silent when the back door opened and Justin stepped out, his nose stuck in his book. He looked up slowly and his eyes grew wide.
“What are you guys doing?!?!?!?” he cried dropping the book.
“Nothing,” I replied, “Just, you know, burning books.”
“Ginger! Put it out! Right now! Or I’ll tell mom!” he threatened.
“What a party pooper,” I muttered, “Okay guys. Let’s put it out.”
We took the fire extinguishers we had set aside and put the fire out. Luckily, most the books were all the way burnt.
After taking picture of what was left of the books, we cleaned up and went inside to hang out until mom came home.
The next day I wasn’t feeling well. I went down stairs and found mom reading a book.
“Mom?” I said in a quiet voice, “I’m not feeling well.”
“You too?” she replied putting her hand on my forehead, “You and your brothers aren’t going to school today.”
“I’m going to get a drink and lay back down,” I said and headed for the kitchen.
I pulled down a glass and poured some orange juice. I gulped it down but still felt thirsty. I poured more but it wasn’t enough. Before I knew it, I had consumed the whole jug.
“Shit, mom’s going to flip,” I cursed shoving the empty jug in the trash can and headed for my room.
I sat on my bed and tried to sleep, but I was so cold. I eventually decided to just read. I sat and read for a minute or two before something crashed through my window making me yell in surprise.
A woman in her late twenty’s maybe early thirty’s, crashed through my window head first, rolled on her back, and popped back onto her feet. She went to the window and looked out. She let out a heavy breath and looked at me.
“W-Who are you?” I stuttered my hands behind my back, gripping the lamp on my bedside table.
“Ginger? Is that you?” she asked ignoring my question, “You were so small the last time I saw you.”
“Ginger? Are you okay? I heard you yell,” I heard Jason’s voice as he pounded on my door.
“Jason get mom!” I screamed and made a run for the door, dropping the lamp.
“Wait a second,” she said grabbing my arm gently and pulling me toward her.
I wiggled away and shouted, “You stay away from me! My mom and brother will be here in a minute to kick your ass!”
She laughed at me.
“I mean it!” I cried angrily.
A second later mom burst through the door yelling, “Ginger, what’s wrong?”
“Rose!” the strange woman yelled with a smile,
“Bunny? What are you doing here?” my mom asked looking confused.
“Oh Rose! I’ve missed you,” she said pulling mom in for a hug.
“Mom you know this woman?” I asked probably looking more confused then she did.
“Ginger this is your godmother, Bunny,” she replied.
“Godmother?” I got out.
“Bunny? What kind of name is that?” Jason asked.
Bunny just laughed, “You were just as funny when you were little.”
“Mom, what’s going on? How come we never met her before? And why is she back now?” I asked.
She sighed, “It’s a long story. Get Justin and come down stairs. I’ll explain everything, including your father.”
“Dad? What about him?” I demanded.
“Get Justin!” mom commanded shoving me and Jason out the door.
We went to Justin’s room and Jason knocked on the door. He didn’t answer.
“Justin!” I called through the door, “Get out here! Mom wants to talk to us!”
He didn’t reply. So Jason tried.
“Justin if you don’t get out here I’m going to kick your ass!” he shouted banging on the door.
“Watch your mouth!” mom called up to us.
I giggled.
“Justin, she’s going to tell us about dad,” Jason said.
The door slowly opened. Justin stood there with his arms crossed across his chest.
“This better be good,” he said and we headed down stairs.
“You don’t look like you’ve aged at all,” I heard mom say.
We stopped to listen as Bunny replied, “I was on a mission, not to long after you left, and long story short, I got bit.”
“Bit?” I whispered to my brothers, “Bit by what?”
“I’m so sorry,” my mom said.
“Don’t be. It was bond to happen eventually,” Bunny assured her.
We walked into the living room and made ourselves comfortable as we waited for mom to speak.
She cleared her throat, “I’m not who you think I am. I didn’t always work as a substitute teacher. I didn’t meet your father in high school and he didn’t die in a car accident. He was killed.”
“Killed? What do you mean?” Justin asked.
“Murdered,” mom replied her teeth clenched in pain at the word.
“Dad was murdered? By who?” I asked barely above a whisper.
Mom opened her mouth but nothing came out. Bunny started, “Her name is Fairen. She’s a-,” she looked at mom.
“She’s a vampire,” my mom whispered.
“A vampire? Mom this really isn’t funny,” Justin said crossing his arms.
“You’re right. It’s not funny. She killed your father and my two closest friends right in front of me. I was lucky to have saved Bunny,” mom explained, “You see, Bunny is the head of a secret government agency that deals with supernatural, undead, and mythical creatures and events.”
“So wait, the government knows that vampires exist?” I cut in.
“Yes, and werewolves and any other fairy tale creature that we were taught weren’t real,” Bunny answered.
“So a vampire killed our dad?” Jason asked.
“Yes, and I hate myself for it everyday. It was my fault,” mom seemed to struggle with the words.
“Don’t let her fool you. It wasn’t her fault. She killed someone in power to the vampires, pissed a few people off, and they wanted revenge. They got it,” Bunny said sadly, “Aaron was one of our best agents. I really lost it when he died.”
“So dad worked for you?” I questioned hardly believing what I was hearing.
“Both your parents did. Your mom just gave up that life after your dad was killed. This is the first time in twelve years I’ve spoken to your mother,” she replied.
I looked at them both in disbelief. How can any of this be real? Maybe I was dreaming.
“There is something else you should know, about your father and me. Well, the vampire I killed, that had the minions, I didn’t kill him before he bit me,” mom started.
My eyes grow wide when I realized what she was going to say.
“He turned me. He turned me into a vampire. I’m a vampire,” she finished.
“As am I. Your father was a vampire too,” Bunny added.
“I bit him to save his life after a werewolf attack,” mom said.
“So if you’re a vampire, and dad was a vampire, then that would make us-,” I muttered unable to finish.
“Vampires,” Bunny responded.
I just stared for a moment. My mouth open in surprise and disbelief. Was it real? Was I a vampire?
“Of course you’re not a vampire yet. Born vampires grow to a certain age before turning. It’s different for every vampire. You haven’t turned yet,” my mom explained, “It’s a process that takes days to complete. You’ll start by being very thirsty and it moves on from there.”
“Th-thirsty?” I stuttered grabbing my throat.
“Yeah, and then your senses with improve, you’ll feel powerful,” my mom said, “When you start feeling that way, you must tell me so I can help you through it.”
I couldn’t say anything. It was all so unreal.
“Okay, mom. You got it,” I replied.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“Nice suit. Where did you get it?” Kate asked as I removed my towel reviling my bathing suit.
“I-I don’t know,” I replied barely realizing she was talking to me.
I was staring at Javen. He was wearing nothing but his swimming trunks and I liked that. He looked over and flashed me a smile. I smiled back, wishing we were more then just friends.
Javen had been my best friend since grade five. We’ve stuck up to bullies together, played all kinds of sports, and pretty much grown up together. It had always been just me, Javen, and Jason. I couldn’t risk that.
“I’m going to get in,” I informed Kate who was drowning her skin in sunscreen.
I walked over to the edge of the pool and looked in. That’s when I sneezed.
I flew backward and hit the ground but felt no pain. I heard a splash then laughter. I looked in the pool and saw my body floating above the water, face down.
“What just happened?” I questioned standing up.
“Okay Ginger, it’s not funny anymore,” Kate said looking a bit worried.
“Ginger?” Jason said my name.
“Oh my God! Someone dive in and save her!” Milly yelled.
Javen and Jason dove in at the same time and each grabbed an arm. Together they pulled me up and out of the pool. I watched, not knowing what to do.
“She’s not breathing!” Jason cried feeling for my pulse.
“Guys I’m over here!” I yelled but no one turned.
“Give her CPR!” Kate suggested hugging her crest.
“I’ll do it!” Trev announced bending over near me.
“Oh no you don’t! Get your hands off me!” I shouted reaching for him.
As soon as I touched him, I was sucked into his body. I looked around me.
“Oh my God! I’m in Trev!” I yelled in disgust.
“Oh move over you idiot!” Javen commanded pressing down on my chest then blowing air in my mouth.
“I’m in Trev! I’m not going to wake up because I’m stuck in Trev body!” I cried for some kind of help.
“Look man, this isn’t funny you a******! That’s my sister!” Jason shouted.
“No Jas, I’m here in Trev!” I tried to explain but Jason took a big swing at Trev’s head.
The impact sent me flying from Trev’s body. Maybe if I touched my own body I would jump back in it.
I placed my hand on my shoulder and was sucked back in. Javen’s lips were still on mine when I spat out a bunch of water, choking. I took in a big breath and Javen put his arm around me.
“Are you okay?” he asked me.
“I think so,” I replied looking around at my friends, “I think I hit my head on the way in.”
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” he sighed in relief and hugged me.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“Thanks,” I said as Javen handed me my glass of tea and sat by me on his bed, “I mean about earlier.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m glad you’re okay,” he said with a smile, “You had me worried for a minute there.”
“Yeah, about that, can I tell you something?” I asked, “And you won’t think I’m crazy.”
“Go a head,” he told me waiting.
“Well, I think I jumped out of my body when I sneezed,” I explained, “I saw you guys pull me from the pool, and I saw you give me CPR. Then I touched Trev, and jumped into his body on accident.”
He didn’t say anything for a minute then asked, “Are you crazy?”
“Have I ever lied to you Javen?” I asked with a serious face.
His face went from joking to serious. I had never lied to him since we met.
“No, did that really happen?” he answered.
“Yes, I swear,” I replied, “I don’t know how it happened. It just did.”
“Well, if you say it, then I believe you,” he assured me and smiled. I smiled back, “But while we’re sharing secrets, do you mind if I told you mine?”
“Sure,” I answered.
He grabbed me by the back of my neck and put his lips near my ear, “I love you,” he whispered.
I felt the butterflies in my stomach and my face grew warm. I pulled my head back and stared into his eyes.
“I love you too,” I replied and looked away.
He grabbed my face and kissed my cheek. He smelled so good. Like candy almost. My mouth watered.
He moved the hair from my face and planted a kiss on my lips. Just a little peck. I grabbed the back of his neck and crushed my lips into his hard.
The smell coming off his body was so strong now. I moved my lips to his throat. I could feel his veins under the skin with my lips. I tried to force myself to stop but I couldn’t. Something sharp broke through my gums and I bit down into Javen’s skin.
He let out a small cry and tore away from me. He stared at me in horror.
“You bit me!” he shouted touching his throat.
“I’m sorry Javen! I didn’t mean it,” I said hiding my face with my hands.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he told me, “It’s just a little blood.”
He wrapped me in his arms and I waited for my mom to pick me up.
Javen walked me and Jason to the car, where mom, Bunny, and Justin where waiting.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” I said climbing in the car.
“You bet,” he replied leaning into the back seat and giving me a quick peck on the lips, the flavor lingering.
Jason shot a strange look at me as I closed the door and waved at Javen.
“What was that?” Jason demanded.
“What was what?” I asked.
“You bet, kiss, kiss,” he replied in a slightly disgusted voice.
“It was just that. A kiss,” I answered smiling to myself and ran my tongue over my lips.
“You kissed Javen?” Justin butted in, “That punk is no good. With his dyed hair and eyebrow piercings.”
“Oh shut-up Justin! Javen is just like me and Jason. Not to mention he’s saved your butt from all kinds of bullies in the past,” I reminded him.
A lot of times, Javen, Jason, and I were the only thing between Justin and an ass kicking. In sixth grade, a girl was throwing paper wads at Justin and laughing at him. So we throw scissors back at her. Let’s just say, we got transferred to a new school and that girl wears an eye-patch. Don’t ask me how mom got us out of that one.
“So you and Javen are you a couple?” my mom asked looking in the rare view mirror.
“Yeah, a couple of freaks!” I laughed which made Jason laugh too.
“She is so much like you,” Bunny told my mom, “So wild and out there.”
I thought of the moment I bit Javen. Should I tell mom?
“Um, mom?” I said to get her attention.
“Yes hon?” she replied glancing at me.
“I, kind of, bit Javen,” I answered.
“You what?!?!?” Bunny and mom both yelled at the same time. Mom turned to the curb and slammed on the brakes.
“Ginger, please say you didn’t,” my mom commanded turning to face me.
“I can’t, because I did,” I replied, “What’s the big deal?”
“You like vampires. What happens when a vampire bites a human?” she questioned with a panicked look.
“They turn,” I whispered covering my mouth with my hand.
“Bunny, what do we do?” my mother turned to her friend for an answer.
“Take Ginger back to the house. She’ll convince him to run away and I’ll do the rest,” she replied.
So we drove back to Javen’s and I snuck through his window.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, “If my mom catches you, she’ll be pissed.”
“Javen I need you to run away with me,” I went straight to the point.
“Ginger, what’s wrong? Why do you want to run away?” he asked taking both my hands.
“I can’t tell you here. I’ll explain when we leave,” I replied.
“I can’t just leave Ginger. Tell me what’s wrong,” he insisted.
“Javen please, if you don’t come with me I’ll start hurting myself again,” I threatened lifting my skirt just enough for him to see the scars on my legs.
My freshman year was hard, so when I was upset I’d take a pocket knife and add a cut to the top of my outer thigh. One day Javen walked in when I was doing it, and forced me to promise I’d never do it again.
“Ginger don’t do that. If it’s that important then I’ll go,” he said getting his bag and shoving important things inside.
We went out his window and snuck toward my mom’s car.
“Why are we going with your mom?” he whispered.
“I’ll explain in the car,” I promised as we crept through the dark.
“Javen! What do you think you’re doing?!?!?!” Javen’s mother yelled at the door, booze bottle in hand.
“I’m running away and never coming back!” he yelled back as we both made a run for the car.
“Well it’s about time you did something right with your life. Don’t come back!” she called taking a long gulp from the bottle she held and slammed the door behind her.
I slammed the car door shut and mom sped from the house.
“So wait you think I’m going to turn into a vampire?” Javen said to my mom who had explained everything to him.
“Yes, though you should have turned already. I turned right after I was bit,” my mom answered with a thoughtful look.
“Ginger’s a born vampire. No one will know when he’ll turn,” Bunny said.
“Well we’ll be prepared,” mom assured her.
“You guys should pack tonight so we can leave tomorrow,” Bunny told us.
“Leaving? To go where?” I asked suddenly confused.
“To train. That power of yours needs to be controlled. And there’s a reason I’m here,” Bunny explained, “I was chased her by Fairen.”
“The vampire that killed dad?” I checked.
“Yes, you guys need to be ready to fight her if you need to. She wants to kill you to hurt your mother,” she replied with bitterness in her words.
“Well’ let’s get moving,” mom told us and we headed up stairs to pack.
I woke up the next day in the car with my head on Jason’s shoulder. Javen was shaking me telling me to wake up.
“Where are we?” I asked rubbing my eyes.
“We’re at the agency training facility,” Bunny answered for him.
“Damn it!” I cursed, “I thought it was all a dream.”
“Nope, it’s real alright,” Bunny laughed, “Hurry inside.”
We left our belongings in the car and headed for the door. We walked in and saw people working out on machines and lifting weights. Every head turned to us.
“Rose? Rose Mercy? No way!” I heard someone say. The whispers of mom’s name continued through the room.
“Why does everyone know you?” I whispered to mom.
“Not everyone. Just the people who have worked here for a long time,” she replied smiling.
“This way,” Bunny instructed leading us to a small room with no one in it, “I’ll be right back.”
She disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a small group of people.
The first one I noticed was tall and a little muscular. She had deep, blue eyes and her hair was dyed crayon red and pulled into a ponytail. Both arms were covered in tattoos and she had a nose piercing between her two nostrils.
“I’m Mortisha,” she introduced herself and extended her hand for a hand shake.
My mom took her hand and said, “I’m Rose Mercy. These are my kids and their friend Javen.”
“The Rose Mercy? It’s a pleasure to meet you ma’am,” Mortisha replied like my mom was her hero.
The next person I noticed was standing by Mortisha. She wore a red bandana and was wearing an eye-patch over her right eye. She was dressed just like a pirate.
“It’s an honor to meet you Ms. Mercy. I’m Julie,” the girl said taking my mom’s hand and shaking it.
“I’m Lyris, head of this team,” a different girl cut in shoving Julie out of the way to get to mom.
She had plain brown hair with eyes that matched. She was tall but not as tall as Mortisha. Her eyes were outlined with blue eyeliner that sparkled with glitter.
“Who are those two? The two in the corner over there,” my mom asked pointing at the two in the corner.
The guy in the corner wore all black, barely showing any skin. He had jet black hair, but his eyes were what got me. They were crystal blue, the only color on him.
The girl wore a long red trench coat that hung almost to the ground, open. Her hair was bleach blond with the ends dyed bright green. I couldn’t see her eyes because they were covered with sunglasses.
“That’s just Shadow and Dead Amy,” Lyris answered sounding disgusted.
“What are your real names?” my mom asked.
“Amy and Ryan but they hate their real names,” Mortisha answered.
“Do they know how to speak?” my mom question jokingly.
“Of course they do. Introduce yourselves to Rose,” Bunny commanded snapping her fingers.
The girl spoke first, “Dead Amy at your service,” she said shaking mom’s hand.
Shadow didn’t move. He just stared at us. Those eyes of his were incredible.
“Ryan, be polite!” Bunny demanded just under a shout.
“My name is Shadow. Pleasure to meet you,” he went to my mom, bowed, and took her hand to kiss the top of it.
“These are my most experienced newbies. They are going to train your kids until they can join the team,” Bunny explained, “Get started.”
Mortisha grabbed me by the wrist a pulled me toward her while the others were pulled away by another team member.
“Okay kid, let’s get started,” she said getting right to business.
“Kid? How old are you?” I demanded.
“Physically, sixteen, mentally, I’m about one-hundred and fifty four,” she replied still dragging me along.
“Are you a vampire too?” I questioned.
She laughed at the question, “Vampire, honey I’m a werewolf.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Training was a b****. After a week of heavy lifting, running, and other physical activity I was worn out. My whole body ached. I thought I was supposed to be a tough vampire chick. Why did I still hurt like a human?
Javen had changed while we were running laps two days ago. Then yesterday he tried to kill Lyris’ cat. That really pissed her off. She’s kind of bitchy.
“Ginger, how do you feel?” Mortisha asked as we were finishing our weight lifting.
“Like I’m going to die,” I replied dropping the weight and sighing in pain.
“Oh you’ll get use to it,” she said patting me on the back making me flinch.
“I don’t know how you do it Morty. I hurt all over,” I replied then it happened again.
My nose itched and I let out a huge sneeze. I flew out of my body. My physical self hit the exercise equipment on the way down and I saw blood.
“Why did I choose now to jump from my body?” I asked myself.
Mortisha bent over me. She looked around and said, “Ginger get back in your body.”
I went over to my body and placed my hand on my shoulder. I was sucked into my body and took in a big breath.
“I hit my f****** head hard,” I said rubbing my sore head, “I’ve got to get this power under control.”
Mortisha wrinkled her nose, “Do you smell that?”
I took a big whiff of the air and smelled a scent I didn’t recognize, “What is it?”
“A vampire I think. One I don’t know,” she replied then she screamed, “Get down! I hear a ticking! Ticking of a bomb!”
We ran to the far side of the room and laid on our stomachs, just in time for half the room to blow up.
“What the hell was that?” I choked out studying the destruction.
“I don’t know. Come on,” Mortisha replied climbing to her feet and pulling me up.
We made a run for the door way, though the door was blown off, to find Bunny. Half was there, a woman popped up in front of us and her arm flew into both of us, making us fly into the wall that was still standing.
“Ginger, I’m going to hold her off,” Mortisha said removing her boots and stockings quickly, “Go get Bunny and Lyris,” she commanded taking out her nose ring surprisingly fast.
She didn’t wait for me to answer. She ran forward and, in a flash, transformed into a wolf, the remaining clothes she wore tearing to shreds. She jumped at the woman, hitting her in the chest, forcing her to the ground. She looked back at me and with a snarl, nodded toward the doorway.
I dashed for the door screaming, “Mom! Bunny! Help!”
I almost made it through when I was thrown back again. I got up and watched Mortisha charge the vampire again. The woman grabbed her by the throat and pulled her into the air. Mortisha clawed and kicked, but couldn’t escape. She stopped kicking and fainted from lack of air. Her body turned back into her human form. The vampire threw her to the side and her eyes locked on me
“Ginger, you look just like your mother,” she whispered with a smile, “I remember that face. It was the last thing I saw before she tore my eyes out.”
“Who are you?” I demanded.
“Building new ones was hard, but my minions did it,” she replied ignoring my question, “I can see now.”
That’s when it hit me, “Fairen,” I whispered.
“You know my name? That b**** mother of yours did a number on me. But I’ll get her back,” Fairen said coming toward me and grabbing me by the throat.
Bunny ran in at that moment and kicked Fairen’s legs out from under her, forcing her to the ground and she let me go.
“Ginger run!” she commanded then yelled at Fairen, “Get the f*** out of here!”
I ran for it again. I slid through the door way to find a bigger fight in the next room. Mom was caught in choke hold by a tall man, and was slowly fading. Lyris and Julie were fighting off a huge deformed animal. Everyone else was either fighting a vampire or knocked out on the floor.
“Her, she one of them!” one yelled pointing in my direction.
“Don’t touch her!” Javen screamed taking down one at the knees.
“Javen-!” I started to scream but someone grabbed me from behind, covering my mouth. I struggled against them, turning fast. I couldn’t believe what I saw.
It was Trev.
I tried to speak but my mouth was still covered. He grinned at me and hit me right between the eyes. I fell into his waiting arms and blacked out.
The skin on my back felt like it was on fire. As I started to wake up, I realized why. I was being drug, by my arm, across dirt and gravel. I squinted my eyes to see in the bright lights. I turned my head just enough to see who was dragging me. It was Trev.
I studied my surroundings to find a bunch of, what I guessed were vampires, sitting around, shouting and cheering. I looked all around and was frightened and confused at the same time. Everything was set up like a gladiator arena.
“Welcome back Sleeping Beauty,” Trev said with a wicked grin.
“Let me go!” I commanded trying to pull away.
“Sorry, I can’t do that,” he replied with the smile still on his face, “I’m going to love what’s next.”
I didn’t reply. I took my free hand and let my fangs down and my nails grew long. I dug my fingers into Trev’s flesh and he hollered in pain, letting me go. A couple big male vampires looked as if they were going to grab for me, so I readied myself for a fight. Trev wiped the blood from his arm and smiled again.
“Don’t touch her. I know how to handle this b****,” he instructed the males and they backed off.
I turned my focus on Trev and asked, “How did you know about me? I just found out I was a vampire. How did you know what was going on?”
“It isn’t obvious? I was working for Fairen the whole time. I was never your friend,” he answered taking a step toward me.
“What do you want from me?” I asked.
“It’s not what I want. It’s what Fairen wants, and she wants your mother to suffer,” he said taking another step.
“What does that have to do with me?” I questioned.
“Well, once she kills you, your brothers, and that sad, sorry, excuse for a hero team, right in front of her, Rose won’t have anything left. Her whole life, swept out from under her,” Trev laughed then took a few more steps until there was only inches between us.
“You make me sick,” I whispered in disgust.
He chuckled and grabbed me by the throat, dragging me again to where chains waited. The chains came down from the ceiling and were strapped around my wrist. Then chains connected to the ground were put around my ankles.
“Too tight, love?” Trev asked in my ear.
I didn’t answer. Instead I asked, “What are you going to do?”
He didn’t say a word. He went behind me and ripped the back of my shirt open, exposing my back.
What the hell is he doing?
“Let them up!” he called and I watched as hidden doors opened from the ground and steel cages appeared.
There were six in all, each holding a person I loved. My mother Rose, Jason, Justin, Bunny, Javen, and Mortisha. So they could watch.
“Didn’t think I’d let them miss the show, did you?” he whispered in my ear.
“Show?” I got out.
He pulled a whip off his belt and held it so I could see it. Oh s***.
“When I finish with you, I’ll move on to that boyfriend of yours,” he laughed cruelly.
He went behind me again and I looked at my mom. She stared back and was screaming, “Let her go! You a******! You touch my baby and I’ll kill you!”
The pain and anger on her face was hard to look at. She looked like she meant what she said. She would kill.
My thoughts were interrupted by a horrible stinging on my back that made me scream in pain. I was bleeding, I knew by the feeling of liquid trickling down my back.
Another lash of pain followed and I cried out again. I looked at the six caged team mates. Jason shook the bars like a mad person and mom screamed and cursed reaching for me uselessly.
The lashes were coming two at a time now. Javen looked scary as his fangs slid from his gums and he exploded into a rage, hitting and shaking the bars, while hissing and growling angrily. Mortisha was doing the same, her wolf fangs exposed as she fought effortlessly against the bars.
I tried not to cry, but the pain betrayed me. I felt tears escaping, running down my face. My teeth were clenched together to keep from screaming again. I wanted to jump out of my body, to get away from the horrible pain. But then my body would be defenseless and I would be trapped between life and death. So I clenched my teeth and I took it.
Then, it suddenly stopped. I waited a moment before letting out a sigh of relief.
I thought too soon. Something wet was dumped on my back that made me howl in pain.
“Got to love the old salt and lemon juice in the wounds,” Trev laughed throwing the bucket.
“Let her go you d***!” Javen shouted his eyes pure black with rage, “I’ll kill you! I’ll f****** kill you!”
Trev ignored him. He just unchained me and I collapsed to my hands and knees. Trev knelt over me and traced his fingers on the inside of my deep wounds, making my whole body tense up, rejecting the pain.
“Stop torturing her!” Mortisha growled her beautiful face filled with anger and pure hatred.
“Set up the stake,” Trev told some of his minions and added, “And get Fairen. She’ll want to do the honors.”
“What? What are you going to do?” I asked through my teeth.
He bent down and lifted my face by the chin, “Look for yourself,” he replied and I turned in the direction he was pointing.
The stake was sticking straight up with the vampire minions stacking dry wood at the base. They were going to burn me!
I got to my feet and stumbled toward the nearest cage. Jason’s cage.
I reached through and grabbed his hand, “They’re going to burn me!” I cried in fear.
“Hold on to me! I won’t let them!” he yelled gripping my arm.
Trev put his arms around my waist and started pulling.
“Jason, I don’t want to burn! I don’t want to die like that!” I screamed as my grip on my brother started slipping.
“Don’t let go Ginger!” Jason commanded.
Trev gave another hard tug. My fingers slipped and I clawed at Jason’s arm to hold on, but was dragged away toward the giant stake. I kicked and screamed but Trev was too strong. He drug me, with little effort, to the stake and forced my hands behind my back, tying me to the wood.
“Trev, don’t do this!” I yelled.
“I’m not, but she is,” he answered pointing to the woman who was now entering the arena.
She didn’t look at me. She was staring at my mom.
“Hello Rose,” she greeted my mother with an evil grin.
“Hey Fairen. Long time no see,” my mom answered coldly.
“I wouldn’t be making jokes if I were you,” Fairen answered just as coldly, “Say good-bye to that thing you call a daughter.”
“Fairen, what happened the last time you f***** with my family?” mom hissed.
Fairen said nothing. She turned to me and smiled.
“You really do look like your mother,” she said smiling.
“Don’t burn me!” I begged, “Please don’t!”
“Sorry, love. It’s the price you pay for being born to this woman,” she answered pointing to mom, “Watch this Rose. I don’t want you to miss a second of her pain.”
Trev handed her a lit piece of wood and she smiled as she set the bottom on fire.
I struggled against the stake to free myself with no luck. I looked in horror as the flames grew and got closer and closer to me. I screamed and shook with fear as the flames consumed me.
I looked on in a rage as Ginger was swallowed by the flames.
“Fairen, you b****! I’ll kill you!” I felt the hate and anger building as I watched my daughter being burned.
“I told you, that you would pay Rose Mercy!” she laughed.
I felt tears well up as Ginger’s body was hidden behind the flames. To my surprise, I heard no screams. The only one I had heard was the first one when the fire first started to cover her. Was she in pain?
That’s when I saw her walk from the fire. Her eyes were pitch and she was smiling. Her body wasn’t touched by the fire. She was completely unharmed. The only burned thing on her was the bottom of her pant leg.
She looked all around her like she was looking for something. Then she spotted Trev. The smile faded and she growled at him. He looked back at her, his eyes wide.
Ginger lifted her hand and a small fire ball formed in her palm. She whispered something I couldn’t hear to him and tossed the fire at him. His whole body went up in flames. He cried out and rolled on the ground to put out the flames but it didn’t help. After a minute or two, he didn’t move anymore.
Ginger’s focus was on me now. She formed another ball of fire and threw it my way. The top of my cage flew off and smoke rose from the heated bars. I flipped over the bars and ran to my baby.
I tried to hug her but she slapped me so hard in the face, it sent me to the ground.
“Don’t touch me b****!” she hissed walking passed me to Javen’s cage.
She touched the bars and they melted away. She put her hand around his throat and tossed him out to the floor.
“Stop it Ginger! It’s me!” he cried desperately.
“I created you! You’re evil and I must destroy you!” she yelled back forming another fire ball and throwing it at him.
Javen rolled out of the way and the fire lifted a small crater where it hit the dirt. She went to throw another one, so I got up and tackled her to the ground. She struggled with me as I pinned her to the ground by her wrist.
“Stop this Ginger!” I commanded, yelling down in her face.
She gave me a horrible, evil smile. A second later, her foot slammed into my stomach sending me into the air. I landed on my back hard and she was on top of me, in my face in a second.
“Come on mother. Fight back!” she laughed.
“What is wrong with you?” I asked trying to force her off me. She was stronger than I was.
She looked over at the cages that remained then turned to me, “Stay out of this mom,” she demanded and picked me up and tossed me into the arena wall.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I wasn’t in control of my body. I was saying and doing things, I didn’t want to do. I had just attacked Javen and I threw my mom into a wall and she wasn’t moving.
I fought for control as I walked toward Jason. He was backed against the bars furthest away from me. I gripped that bars, against my will, and burned them away.
“Come brother. You’re free,” my voice came out but I didn’t commanded it.
“Ginger, something is wrong with you,” Jason said.
I know something is wrong, is what I wanted to say, but instead I answered, “Something is wrong with you if you think you can talk to me like that!” and I picked him up by the throat and started squeezing.
Stop it! I shouted in my head. Stop hurting him! You’re going to kill him!
“Let him go Ginger!” Justin yelled at me, “You’re choking him!”
My eyes flew to Justin and I felt my whole body heat up with a rage I couldn’t control. I dropped Jason and formed a fire ball.
No! Put it out! Don’t throw it!
“How dare you command me?” I screamed and got ready to throw the fire at my brother.
At the last second, I got an idea. I pushed my spirit-self from my body. I fell out of myself and watched my body collapse to the dirt.
“Ginger!” Javen called making his way to my body.
“Is she alive?” Bunny asked though the bars.
“Yeah, she still has a pulse,” he answered placing my head on his lap and smoothing my forehead.
I went over and touched my body and jumped back in. I gasped in a breath and clenched Javen’s arm.
“I couldn’t control it,” I gasped.
“It’s okay Ginger,” he said giving me a weak smile, “You’re safe.”
I smiled back and wrapped him in my arms. I looked behind him and pulled away. The eyes of angry vampires stared back.
“I don’t think we’re safe yet, Javen,” I said pointing to the monsters.
Javen and I readied ourselves at the same time the vamps did. Jason and mom were still out and the rest where trapped in their prisons. It was the two of us verses them.
A few started to charge when the roof caved just a little ahead of us. A second later, Dead Amy and Shadow jumped down. Lyris and Julie followed.
“Didn’t think we’d leave you here to rot, did you?” Julie said smiling and facing the vampires.
Shadow and Dead Amy stepped out in front. Amy ripped her glasses off and they both stared straight ahead. The vampires stopped suddenly, not moving one inch.
“What’s wrong with them?” I asked.
“Shadow and Dead Amy are able to temporarily freeze them with their mind. Hurry, let’s get out of here,” Lyris answered, “Start the ‘Copter Julie.”
Julie took off her pirate trench coat and beautiful black wings grew from her back. Blood dripped from the wounds but quickly healed themselves and Julie didn’t seem to feel any pain.
She flew up and disappeared to get the helicopter. I went to each cage and used the heat in my hands to melt the bars, careful not to lose control.
I picked my mom up in my arms while Mortisha grabbed Jason. A rope dropped down for us. Bunny went up first and we started to follow.
“Um, you might want to hurry,” Dead Amy said joining us by the rope waiting her turn.
“Why?” I asked handing mom up.
“Their not frozen anymore,” she replied casually climbing up the rope.
Shadow ran toward me with the vampires on his tail. I climbed up and yelled, “Pull up!”
Shadow pulled himself up the rope as Julie got the ‘Copter up higher and flew us home.
“So what are we going to do?” mom asked pacing angrily back and forth, “Fairen got away again.”
“We’ll find her. Calm down Rose,” Bunny replied grabbing her by the hand and pulling her down to the couch.
“How can I? We got lucky. If Ginger hadn’t had the fire power she has, we would all be dead,” mom said making her hands into fist.
“We all almost died anyway,” Justin said bitterly, “She can’t control that fire thing. She nearly choked Jason to death.”
“Stop that Justin! It wasn’t her fault,” mom said.
“We just need a lot more training. When we find her again, she’s dead,” Mortisha said pulling her hand across her throat like she was cutting it, “Then we’ll have tasty vampire barbeque,” she licked her lips as she finished.
“You are so gross!” Lyris complained in her whiny voice.
“Don’t start bickering. I am so not in the mood,” Julie sighed.
“Stop it! All of you!” Bunny shouted, “I will not tolerate this! Now, either shape up and focus, or leave!”
I stepped into the middle of them and said, “Let’s get to work. When Fairen comes back, we have to be ready. Who else wants to kick her ass?”
A loud cheer rose up from the room and Mortisha put her arm around my shoulders and replied, “Let’s get started.”
